The Scottish National Age Groups (SNAGs) swimming competition in Aberdeen witnessed a remarkable performance by 15-year-old Julian Okroj, who claimed an impressive nine medals, including four golds. Okroj, representing the Delting Dolphins, showcased his versatility by dominating in various events, from the 100m backstroke to the 400m individual medley. His success is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the Delting Dolphins and Shetland Hurricanes swimmers, who were supported by sponsors like NorthLink Ferries and the National Lottery.
What makes Okroj's achievement even more remarkable is the presence of other talented swimmers from his clubs. Lockie Bullough, also from Delting Dolphins, earned a bronze medal in the 100m butterfly and made the finals in the 50m backstroke and 100m freestyle, setting a personal best in the latter. Ross Drakeford and Innes McDill, both 15 and 16 years old, respectively, made their SNAGs debut, with Drakeford gaining personal bests in the 50m breaststroke and 100m freestyle, and McDill contributing to the relay team.
The Shetland Hurricanes swimmers also shone, with Ruaridh Chittick, 14, earning personal bests in the 100m backstroke, 50m freestyle, and 100m butterfly, and making the final in the freestyle race. Ellie Thompson, also 14, achieved significant personal bests in the 400m and 800m freestyle events. Stella Okroj, 12, gained personal bests in the 100m and 200m backstroke, and her teammates, Eve Moncrieff, Camryn Cheyney, and Astrid Anderson, put in a great performance in the 4x100m Freestyle relay, finishing 18th in their age group.
The highlight of the competition came on the last day, when the girls' 4x100m medley relay team, including Ella Winks and Sophia Cheatle, won their heat. This success is a testament to the strong swimming culture in Shetland, with the clubs' achievements supported by sponsors and the community's commitment to local journalism.
